An estimated 90% of the flowers bought in this country are imported, not just from Holland, some are flown in from Columbia and Ethiopia. In order to preserve the flowers for these long journeys, they are often sprayed with chemicals and then put onto aeroplanes to bring them to the UK.

Your average commercially grown British cut flower will have 10% of the carbon footprint of those of international commercial growers. Those grown by your local flower farmer like the Flowers on the hill will have an average of 5% in comparison.

The other major advantage to British flowers is that no two selections will ever be the same, they are all freshly picked from the flower patch, or sourced from other local growers. Different types of flowers will come and go throughout the season. Another fantastic outcome of flowers grown using organic and sustainable methods is that they maintain their fragrance.
